For the People
We helped elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and win the Senate. Now we need to protect democracy. The For the People Act includes automatic voter registration, universal vote-by-mail, universal same day registration, nationwide early voting, prohibits voter purges, and helps end partisan gerrymandering. It is the next critical civil rights act.
Republicans are doing everything they can to suppress the vote across the country. Voter suppression is an attack on the very measures that gave more people access to the ballot box in 2020.
The For the People Act will only pass if people like us are willing to take action. Calling or writing to your senators can go a long way, especially when S. 1 will be decided by only a few votes.
Debate in Congress will likely continue until September. It is not too late to get involved. Our phone banks and postcarding will likely continue through August.
We are organizing phone banks and postcarding with Common Cause to encourage voters in key states to call their Senators to pass the For the People Act. States we are targeting include New Hampshire, Nevada, Maine, Alaska, Delaware, Virginia, and California.
Getting moderate Senators to announce they support modifying the filibuster is the best way to convince Senator Joe Manchin (WV) to do the same. In Senator Ed Markey (MA)’s words , “Congress is a stimulus response institution and there’s nothing more stimulating than constituent calls. It makes a big difference.”
What You Can Do
- Become a postcard event host. Recruit friends to write postcards to senators in key swing states where our advocacy will have the biggest impact.
- Join a phone bank. Encourage voters in key swing states to call their Senators and express support for S. 1.

- 117,600 to Arizona, West Virginia and New York
- 58,000 to New Hampshire
- 55,500 to Maine
- Currently working on Nevada
We have seen results:
- Generating 1000’s of call to Senators
- Joe Manchin’s proposal endorsed by Stacey Abrams
Updates on S. 1
Over 350 voter suppression bills have been filed in state legislatures across the country. On June 29th, 2021 the Supreme Court decided to uphold voting restrictions in Arizona. These threats to democracy make the passage of the For the People Act critical.
On June 22, 2021, Republicans blocked a vote to begin debate on S1, the For the People Act. The vote was a setback, however Senator Klobuchar, Senate Majority Leader Schumer, and even President Biden have vowed to continue the fight to pass this crucial legislation.
